There appears to always be a fruit at FFS that I’m completely unfamiliar with but thrilled to be introduced to, and this year it is Soursop (aka Guanabana). At first, I mistook it about the label for cherimoya – ends up they’re cousins. This nectar was the right number of sweet, creamy and sweet. I’d really like to test working this to baked products somehow.

Nova Crisps are air-popped snacks made out of cassava, a South American origin vegetable. I am not sure if cassava is a brand new ingredient to most Americans because I keep mixing it up with casaba melon. Whatever the instance, the packaging on these crisps caught my attention – the Sea Salt and Maui Onion flavors fit directly into the present unicorn/mermaid aesthetic, with a deep-space twist. Love it. The crisps themselves were so yummy – the Maui Onion was my favorite. The texture was like a rice cake, but more delicate.

Goldthread had two plant-based tonics with tastes which were brand new to me. Tulsi Clarity features tulsi (aka holy Basil), an plant foliage native to Southeast Asia which gives you – you guessed it – clarity…and calmness for good measure. The tonic also has hibiscus and goji berry and also tastes quite fruity. The Schisandra Supreme includes a medicinal berry out of China/Russia that provides uplifting energy, much like ginseng. Both were fruity and delicious.

Mushrooms aren’t a brand new food to any people, but they look in an odd format . I’m kind of a sucker for anything with the word”jerky” inside, so I needed to try this, and that I wasn’t disappointed. Based on a family recipe in Malaysia, all of the familiar deep, meaty, savory beef jerky components were present, along with the BBQ and Thai flavors added a nice dimension. The texture was somewhat softer than I anticipated, but still using all the sting and chewiness of familiar jerky solutions.

Garden of Flavor’s Cold-Pressed Energy Drinks were based on a new-to-me component: the guayusa leaf, out of Amazonian caffeinated holly trees. This whole range of juices were tasty – the wheatgrass was not too grassy (I did not think that was possible), aloe vera was a tart shot of lemon and ginger, and while the Pear Reishi was earthy, it didn’t scream mushroom.

Now that all of us understand what quinoa is, let us locate the new quinoa — FONIO! This grain, that’s barely larger than sand granules, is increased in West Africa. It’s gluten-free, high in protein, cooks in five minutes and includes a neutral flavor that makes it a fantastic foundation like rice, quinoa, or couscous. The samples on hand were blended with tomato and herbs to a tasty pilaf. Yolélé as a business is also working to improve West African small farmers and female-owned collectives.

Though a lot of novel ingredients at FFS were targeted towards fruits or herbs which have medicinal or health-boosting properties, Kamsa are flavored waters comprising a familiar sweetener in a more natural form. Panela is a raw cane sugar product from Colombia that retains the original flavor of sugarcane juice that is lost in refining it into white or brown sugar. Since these waters were dominated flavor-wise by the fruits and vegetables in these I could not actually tell the difference in sweeteners, but overall they were tasty drinks.

Again, Matzo is not a new ingredient here in the united states, but I have not seen it chips before, and I’m enjoying it. The packaging is cute – I’m pretty sure I’ve met that Granny on the bag a hundred occasions. Second, the texture and flavor of the new Harissa collection is great – crunchy and spicier than I would usually prefer, but I couldn’t quit eating them.
